grant elementary School safety Patrol

This 1960s photograph from the collection of the Hennepin County Library shows a School Safety Patrol class in session at Grant Elementary School.

Today, 57 Minneapolis schools have School Safety Patrols.  Walking Patrol students guide and guard other students as they cross streets in and out of school.  Bus Patrol students help the driver make sure the bus riding students behave and follow the rules.  Bus Patrol students are taught how to do an emergency evacuation, turn off the bus engine, and use the radio to call for help.

In order to qualify to become a patrol member, students must have good grades and good behavior.  They must be able to develop and demonstrate the program skills which include: learning how to lead; keeping focus; giving commands; taking reports; using flags; and displaying good manners.

The program is known for developing outstanding citizenship qualities in its patrol members.  Many patrol members go on to become police officers, firefighters, medical professionals, teachers, librarians or to engage in other aspects of public service or volunteerism.  The program is greatly praised by community members.  The School Patrol Safety Program changes and saves lives.
